Mandatory Upgrade Notice

Dear Customers and Partners:

Due to the impact of a court order regarding US Patent No. 9736689, Hong Kong uCloudlink Network Technology Limited (hereinafter referred to as ‘uCloudlink’) will cease to provide service and sales of non-upgraded products which have been found by a court to infringe in the United States from September 1st, 2019.  In order to ensure the normal function of your devices, please upgrade your devices with the latest version of our software. If you do not complete the upgrade, your devices will be out of service in the United States after September 1st, 2019.

uCloudlink has released an upgraded new version of software for its back-end server on May 10, 2019, which can avoid any infringement of Patent US9736689.  Since that date, uCloudlink has been upgrading its own devices to use the upgraded software in the United States. However, in order to prevent any dispute regarding infringement, all the Pocket Wi-Fi devices are required to be upgraded with the new version of the software released on or after June 1, 2019, and all GlocalMe applications installed on World Phone are required to be upgraded to the new version released on or after August 1, 2019. This upgrade should have already been completed by OTA upgrade on the version release date.

All Roamingman products and most of the products in the market today have already been upgraded since Jun 1, 2019. This mandatory upgrade is required for all Pocket Wi-Fi devices with the software version issued before June 1, 2019 and all World Phone with software version issued before August 1, 2019. Relevant products include:

Pocket Wi-Fi device series:   G2/G3/U2

World Phone series:   S1

If the software version in your device is issued after the date mentioned above, no further upgrade is required.

Solution:

1.      For dealers, please inform or assist the end users for the upgrade at the time of sales. Stock return for new stock replacement is acceptable. You might contact your account service for the physical upgrade operation.

2.     For individual customers who have purchased the products, please upgrade to the latest software version directly.  The non-upgraded products will not function in the United States without this upgrade. If you need to upgrade your device in the United States, please connect to Wi-Fi to complete the software upgrade.

Impact of the Upgrade:

1.      For areas other than the United States, the user experience will remain unchanged after the completion of the software upgrade.

2.     For service in the United States, the intelligent network hopping under weak signals will be limited, but this should not impact the normal functioning of the device.
